Comprising five diverse Research Centres, the IRCAHS was formally opened by Professor Laurie Taylor in early 2012. Within the Institute our primary aims are to facilitate, support and strengthen research collaboration across social and human sciences, and to build upon the existing research excellence in those areas at the University of Huddersfield.

General Practice and Primary Care (GPPC) at the University of Glasgow has 36 academic and research staff and 11 support staff.

Our research group is located within the Institute of Health and Wellbeing which brings together the MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, research groups in mental health, public health, health economics, and the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics, as well as the Glasgow Clinical Trials Unit, into an interdisciplinary grouping of over 200 staff benefiting from frequent and regular seminar programmes and thematic workshops.

The department of primary care in Exeter is extensive and multidisciplinery with around £21m of income since 2004.

An interdisciplinary research hub, the Centre for Population Health Sciences (CPHS) draws together researchers, clinicians and practitioners from public health, primary care, biomedical and social sciences with expertise in epidemiology, statistics and modelling, sociology, social policy, psychology, economics, geography, health promotion, nursing and medicine.

Our research combines clinical, epidemiological and social sciences to extend knowledge that addresses the core challenges of primary care. We focus our research on patient needs, working both with quantitative and qualitative approaches, and addressing issues both at the level of individual patients and populations.

The Centre for Integrated Health Care Research provides an academic interface for health care professionals. Our work is based on clinical research, particularly around the management of patients across the primary/secondary care interface. The Centre provides research training and mentoring and is funded to facilitate academic development to primary care professionals, particularly from the Durham locality. We work closely with NHS research bodies, and we have partnerships with Acute Trusts and Primary Care Trusts.

The overall aim of Population Health Sciences (PHS) is to improve population health.

Researchers at the Cochrane Institute of Primary Care and Public Health have risen to the challenge of researching “hard to reach” groups, intervening with the most difficult to change health behaviours that have resulted in high levels of chronic health problems.
